Dr. Ruth E. Lugo, Dean

Dr. Lugo has held the title of Dean of the Audrey Cohen School for Human Services and Education at Metropolitan College of New York since September 2001. Throughout her twenty years in higher education, she has served in senior level, policy making leadership positions in both academic and student affairs. Dr Lugo’s contributions to institutional planning and assessment, curriculum design and faculty development have earned her a reputation as a strong advocate for academic excellence, access and diversity.

Dr. Lugo has taught courses in Latin American Literature, Hispanic Languages and Literature at La Guardia Community College, William Paterson University, and Montclair State University. In addition, she has participated in postgraduate leadership training at the Institute for Educational Management for Senior University Administrators in the Graduate School of Education and the John F. Kennedy School of Government Executive Program of Public Management (both at Harvard University), The Center for Creative Leadership, and Cornell University’s School for Labor Relations. She has spoken at national and international organizations and has been very active with the accreditation process with the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools in the North East Region and Puerto Rico.

Dr. Lugo’s most recent honors and awards include: Phi Theta Kappa Honorary Member; American Council on Education National Forum for Women in Higher Education; and a Queens Borough President Citation Award for Community Leadership. She has been chosen as Fellow for the American Council on Education; Leadership America; National Hispana Leadership Institute; the Executive Leadership Institute from the League for Innovation in the Community College and the Ford Foundation.


Dr. Heide Hlawaty, Chair of General Education & Liberal Arts Programs

Dr. Hlawaty received her BS at SUNY Stony Brook in Biochemistry with an International Studies Minor, MA in Biological Sciences at Hunter College and her Ed.D. in Instructional Leadership at St. John’s University. She taught educational research, brain-based learning, and elementary education science at Georgia College and State University before returning to New York. Prior to teaching in higher education, she taught high school science for 12 years in Queens and on Long Island, and was a Fulbright grantee in Bochum-Langendreer (in North Rhine-Westfalia, Germany).

Dr. Hlawaty’s research interests include learning styles, science education, and attitudes regarding queer-identity individuals. As a professor and chair, she teaches in the Bachelor of Professional Studies and the Bachelor of American Urban Studies programs.


Dr. Clyde Griffin, Chair of the Human Services Program

Dr. Griffin is currently chair of Counseling and Leadership Development at Metropolitan College of New York. He originally joined the MCNY as a fulltime faculty member in 1983. Dr. Griffin holds an undergraduate degree in Romance languages and literature from Ohio State University, a masters in English as a second language, and a doctorate in linguistics and education from Teachers College, Columbia. His doctoral work included interdisciplinary studies in family literacy, therapist/client communication, and the design and implementation of teacher training programs.

Before coming to MCNY, Dr. Griffin taught in Nigeria as a Peace Corps Volunteer. He taught both English and French and also developed a community library and a local network of medical professionals. Upon his return to the U.S., he spent ten years teaching in independent schools, whose function is to prepare students for elite colleges in the United States. He was chairman of the foreign language department and taught courses in French, Spanish, Italian, and German, as well as in English literature and the humanities. As chairman, he was responsible for all administrative matters concerning the department as well as being responsible for the academic integrity of the program, which included the training of new teachers. Immediately before beginning his career at MCNY, he was a teacher trainer and part-time coordinator of the ESL program at Teachers College, Columbia.

At MCNY, Dr. Griffin has been responsible for developing curriculum in self-assessment, groups, teaching, counseling, managing change, and in the liberal arts. He has also served as the director of the Advanced Standing Program, a program that awards college credit to students for their work experience and learning in the Field. During his tenure, Dr. Griffin has, in addition to teaching, worked in the field of human service to develop programs for abused and neglected adolescents. The program in which he worked at Edwin Gould Academy has become a national model for working with disturbed youth and has been recognized by both the Ford Foundation and the Harvard Graduate School of Education.


Dr. Patrick Ianniello, Director of the Master of Science Degree in Education program

Dr. Ianniello has served as a principal, assistant principal and an elementary school teacher in New York City Public Schools for 34 years. He has extensive experience in the professional development and evaluation of teachers, planning and implementing best practices in the elementary school curriculum and integrating technology in classrooms. Dr. Ianniello received his doctorate in educational communication and technology at New York University.
